How to Record Your Screen on Windows (Built-In, No Download)
Windows has a built-in screen recorder — you don’t need to download anything. On Windows 11, press Win + Shift + S to open Snipping Tool’s screen recorder. On Windows 10, press Win + G to open Xbox Game Bar. Both save the recording as an MP4 file.
Method 1: Windows 11 — Snipping Tool (simplest)
- Press Win + Shift + S and click the video-record icon at the top of the tool.
- Click New.
- Drag to select the area you want to record.
- Click Start at the top of the screen.
- Press Stop when done — the video is saved to Videos → Screen Recordings automatically.
Snipping Tool records with audio from your microphone by default.
Method 2: Windows 10 & 11 — Xbox Game Bar
Best for full-screen apps and games, and it lets you record for longer with more controls.
- Press Win + G to open the Game Bar overlay.
- Click the record button (●) or press Win + Alt + R to start.
- Use the floating timer to stop (or press Win + Alt + R again).
- The clip is saved to Videos → Captures.
Tip: Make sure “Record audio” is on (the mic icon in the overlay) if you want your voice in the clip.
Where are the recordings saved?
| Tool | Default folder |
|---|---|
| Snipping Tool (Win 11) | Videos\Screen Recordings |
| Xbox Game Bar (Win 10/11) | Videos\Captures |
FAQ
Does Windows have a free screen recorder?
Yes. Windows 11 includes Snipping Tool’s screen recorder, and both Windows 10 and 11 include Xbox Game Bar. No downloads required.
Can I record my screen with audio on Windows?
Yes. Xbox Game Bar and Snipping Tool both capture your microphone audio. To capture system sound, you may need to enable “stereo mix” or use a third-party tool.
How long can I record with Xbox Game Bar?
Xbox Game Bar has no hard time limit — it records until you stop it. Very long recordings create large MP4 files, so check available disk space first.
