How to Take a Screenshot on Windows (11 & 10, 3 Ways)

The fastest way to screenshot on Windows is to press Win + Shift + S to open the Snipping Tool, then drag over the area you want to capture. The image is copied to your clipboard — paste it anywhere with Ctrl + V. For a full-screen capture saved straight to a file, press Win + Print Screen. On a Mac? See how to screenshot on Mac instead.

Method 1: Snipping Tool (best for most people)

  1. Press Win + Shift + S. The screen dims and a small toolbar appears at the top.
  2. Choose a mode: Rectangular (default), Freeform, Window, or Fullscreen.
  3. Drag to select the area, then release.
  4. A notification appears — click it to open the capture in Snipping Tool, where you can annotate and save.

On Windows 11 you can also press Win + Shift + S, then the video icon to record instead — see how to record your screen on Windows.

Method 2: Print Screen key (fastest)

KeysWhat it does
Print Screen (PrtScn)Copies full screen to clipboard
Win + Print ScreenSaves full screen as a PNG to Pictures\Screenshots
Alt + Print ScreenCopies only the active window to clipboard

On some laptops the Print Screen key shares space with another function — hold the Fn key if it doesn’t respond.

Method 3: Xbox Game Bar (games and apps)

  1. Press Win + G to open Game Bar.
  2. Click the camera icon in the Capture widget (or press Win + Alt + PrtScn).
  3. The screenshot saves to Videos\Captures.

Why is my Print Screen key not working?

Laptops often need the Fn key held down. You can also remap it in Settings → Accessibility → Keyboard.
